Brian's birthday
It's a far cry from the 1959
ABC heyday ownership that installed the 500 arena seating with eight
shows daily. But it's still got its charm. Nostalgia reigns supreme
in this little park. |

Currently Weeki Wachee is
an incorporated city; with a grand total of 9 residents (the Mayor -
a former mermaid herself). They're trying to hold onto the last bit
of mermaid history, god love them. I believe they may do it. You can
see the love they have for this park in the details. It may be old and
kitschy, but someone there really cares. That'll be what draws visitors
back. |

Everyone agreed that the
show was really cool. It's mystifying that the girls are actually under
there (in those costumes!!) managing to swim, BREATHE and perform a
show. We even had two guest stars in our production, two active turtles
that swam around like it was nothing unusual to see a pretty mermaid
swimming by. We managed to squeeze into the last showing of Hans Christian
Anderson's 'The Little Mermaid' before the park closed down for the
day. It was an interesting version of a story everyone in our family
knew. |

The water park is a fun addition
(and helps make this a day park) but I have to disagree with the title
of the 'lazy river.' Never have I had to work so hard to 'float' anywhere
in my life. Currents forcing you in the wrong direction, two person
inner tubes - just a recipe for aggravation - but as aggravating as
it was - it was still worth it. The water in this river is enough to
make the trip down worthwhile, it was so clean and cold - just amazing! |
|
I don't regret the trip;
the nostalgia is obviously what brings people to this park. And well,
it's not often you can say you saw mermaids for your birthday. The quant
little day trips that we fondly remember from our past - will hopefully
keep the next generation hunting for mermaids. |

As the mermaids sing in The
Little Mermaid show: We're not like other women, We don't have to clean an oven And we never will grow old, We've got the world by the tail! |
